About Spend Based Tiers
Spend Based Tiers allows you to add a spend threshold to your tiers so that members can earn their way in, on top of being able to buy their way in.
By adding a spend threshold to your tier, your members will be incentivized to spend more at your shop in order to get their free upgrade. The spend threshold is based on products other than the membership fee - although do you have the option to include the membership fee in the spend threshold if you'd like.

FAQ
Can I customize how often the spend threshold resets? Yes, you can set the spend threshold to be monthly, quarterly, annually, yearly and lifetime spend.
How is frequency tracked once a member earns into a tier?
When a member earns their way into a Spend Based Tier, they remain in that tier until the next scheduled evaluation based on your selected frequency (Monthly or Yearly).
Spend Based Tiers are evaluated using full calendar periods — not rolling 30-day or 12-month windows, and not based on the exact date the member qualified.
How Monthly frequency works
Members are evaluated on the 1st of each month.
The system reviews spending from the entire previous month.
Example:
If a member earns a tier on January 15:
They remain in the tier through February.
They are evaluated on March 1.
The system checks spending from February 1–February 28.
Only that full month counts toward the evaluation.
How Yearly frequency works
Members are evaluated on January 1.
The system reviews spending from the entire previous calendar year.
Example:
If a member earns a tier on August 15, 2024:
They remain in the tier through the end of 2025.
They are evaluated on January 1, 2026.
The system checks spending from January 1–December 31, 2025.
Only that full calendar year counts toward the evaluation.
Do members get credit for previously made purchases?
No, members only begin earning towards the spend threshold once they become a member of your program. Sales previous to joining are not counted.
Can I apply spend threshold for free tiers?
Yes, you can create a program of all free tiers and apply spend thresholds to each.
What happens to the member's subscription contract if they upgrade? The member's subscription contract via Shopify stays at whichever tier they signed up for. Inveterate handles upgrading and downgrading outside of the subscription contract.
For example, a member signs up for a $10/mo tier and earns into a $20 per month tier, they would continue to be charged the $10/mo they signed up for.
If a free tier member earns into a paid tier, they will not be charged.
What happens to the member's profile tags if they upgrade?
Whenever a member is upgraded or downgraded between tiers Inveterate will update the tags on their Shopify profile accordingly. This means these members/tags will also update in your other integrations such as Klaviyo, etc.
Are nonmembers automatically upgraded into a tier based on spend?
No, your customer needs to be a member in order for any of their purchases to be counted twoards an upgrade. Inveterate does not auto-enroll your customers into the membership program.
